Where I Left My Butterflies

The snow squeaks under my bright blue ski boots. Each step seems to take me two steps backwards. Burning inside and out, mussels aching and getting heavier with each step. The more I walk forward the smaller I feel. Humbled by the greatness of something so purely beautiful and dangerous. Looking back I see all that I have climbed, I smile and open a crack in my sunburnt lips. My sense of accomplishment is buried under the respect I hold for these mountains. I laugh at my sudden seriousness and think, this is my home.
